sigi liebmann owner of international timberframes in golden, bc

bc log and timber company profile

After coming to Canada in 1999 to help establish timberframing in the Golden area, Swiss master timberframer Sigi Liebmann set up International Timberframes in 2003.

He quickly became known as the go-to wood expert offering advice, ideas, inspiration and individual solutions. International Timberframes are still based in Golden BC.

International Timberframes was borne out of Sigi’s love of wood and his desire to show it’s the most natural and healthy product to build with. With his team of highly skilled timberframers he is passionate about the human art and human touch involved: we cut and prepare by hand, making the most of each unique piece of wood in a way no machine can, using traditional craftsman skills.

The team proudly uses state of the art technologies in design and planning, and combines them with these traditional hand-cutting skills. Keeping the timberframe craft alive is fundamental to the business.

International Timberframes is now a well established Timberframer in BC and Alberta providing all styles of timberframe work, from modern and contemporary to rustic or traditional. We design, cut and install a wide range of projects:

  • Full timber-frame packages for homes or commercial applications

  • Timberframe additions to existing structures

  • Decorative timber accents and brackets

  • Timberframe Stairs

  • Decks and Railings

  • Timber Gazebos and landscape features

  • Speciality heavy timber furniture

  • Heavy timber design and pre-engineering of Timberstructures

Values and Principles

We love wood

Authentically Modern

Wood has been used by artisans and builders for thousands of years and by preserving traditional skills and passing on our skills we can keep the craft alive. In a modern world with a bewildering array of artificial products, wood is the real thing. Wood stands the test of time.

Leading Edge

We love innovative design and providing wood solutions where others may not have the expertise. We take authentic properties of wood and couple them with leading edge technologies in design and planning to deliver outstanding quality work.

Integrity

Wood has been used by artisans and builders for thousands of years and by preserving traditional skills and passing on our skills we can keep the craft alive. In a modern world with a bewildering array of artificial products, wood is the real thing. Wood stands the test of time.

Sustainable

We believe that words like green, sustainable and healthy have honest meaning beyond marketing. If properly managed wood is the ultimate healthy building material. We will always try to do the right thing, for the client, for the community and for the planet. We take whole-hearted steps to act in as environmentally sustainable a manner as we can, every day, every week, every project.

expert master timberframer

Sigi Liebmann

Owner and Master Timberframer

Founder of International Timberframes in 2003. Over the years has given technical advice to many Timberframe companies. Moritz Kohler

Project Manager and Designer

After 5 years with an Architecture firm in Quebec Moritz moved to BC and did his Masters Eng. in Integrated Wood Design at UNBC.  A natural wood lover for as long as he can remember, one of the reasons Moritz loves BC is the timber frame and mass timber structures.  The other reasons he loves being in BC and Golden are the endless skiing, hiking, camping, mountain biking, photography and travel opportunities.

Nicole Altkuela

Business Support Manager

Having worked originally for a natural wood flooring and stone tile company in Estonia then managing a ski lodge restaurant in Canada, Nicole joined us bringing her love of the environment and all things natural. A sociologist by education, a diver when by the sea, doing anything adventurous when in the mountains, when not at work you’ll find her on her new mountain bike or being crafty making things for her home.

Phil Wood

Timberframer

Phil is another lover of wood: it’s simplicity and beauty and the craftsmanship of timberframing.  He is living his dream, having built his own timberframe cabin surrounded by mountains to ski and hike and lakes to fish.  Phil is our team Olympian, having represented Canada in Sochi as a guide and wax technician for a blind skier.

Cory Schacher

Timberframer

Cory has lived in Golden all of his life.  With his wife and 4 children he lives in his hand-cut timberframe home on 10 acres of forest.  He has worked with wood his whole life: in a sawmill, in forestry and in timber framing for the last 10 years and is an exceptionally talented wood carver.  Cory thinks sawdust makes the best air freshener and wishes he could find deodorant that smells like it (we haven’t checked this one with his wife). He does do one thing that doesn’t involve wood – fishing for trout!

Sven Schuler

Timberframer

Originally from Switzerland Sven qualified as a traditional masonry oven builder.  He’s been in Golden now for over 10 years after time working, travelling and exploring in different countries.  He is now enjoying transferring his craftsman skills and expertise to wood and loves quality material and tools.  If we need to get fit we need to spend more time with Sven who loves the outdoors:  in winter you’ll find him backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering and in summer alpine climbing, trail running and cycling.

Cian Brinker

Timberframer

Joining us from a renovation company in Calgary, Cian loves craftsmanship. He loves the honesty and visual presence of the timberframer’s work in a home. He loves rugby, rock climbing, fishing and working on his house. If one day you visit Kinbasket Lake and see a giant floating barge with a timberframe atop, that’s where you’ll find him.
